You can read all the gory details here. Fortunately, his helmet did its job and saved his ass. Crashing is part of riding, and we all assume the risk. Most of the time, we put it in the back of our heads, try not to think about it. It makes sense actually. If all you think about is crashing, chances are, you will. So I think it makes it that much scarier when you hear about a friend and fellow rider stacking it up. Stoked to hear that you're no worse for wear Doug! Could have been way worse. Everyone else, ride safe out there...

-I knew he was alright when I heard he was updating his facebook from the hospital.

Pedalr

We've got a new storefront set up over on a neat little site called Pedalr. Being out of town for the long weekend coupled with trying to finish up a couple of dangling projects makes for little time to get on the bike. There's nothing like a well deserved ride to put your mind in the right place. A quick flick I snapped:

About 5mins later, I rolled under that thing. It held off from dropping water on me and blocked out the sun a bit, even felt like it cooled of the humidity a bit. Thanks angry anvil cloud!

Found a great photo of Doug in yesterday's stage in the TransSylvania Epic. He's still kill'n it and sitting in 2nd overall for the SS category.

-"I think I rolled over that berm at close to 20mph when this shot was taken. we were riding SO fast yesterday."-Dougy-Fresh
-Photo by A.E. Mike faired in the upper half of the racers in his class, and was less than a minute behind the top pro's times. Nice work dude! A couple of flicks for the reading impaired:

-"So, basically, you go fast through here."

-"And when you're tired of going fast, come up short on the gap and nearly blast your groceries apart on your seat."

Its that time of year again, downhill race season!!!! I headed to plattekill for the season opener, there was a ton of buzz around this race. It was the 2nd stop of the Pro GRT race series that is happening in the US this year and a lot of big world cup name's are actually racing it. This plattekill race was also a chance to get UCI points on the east coast before the World Champs in windham in august. The week up to the race i saw tons of helmet cam shots of the course, pictures, and i recognized the trail for the most part. I was super stoked, it was on the triple side, on a classic old trail that traverses the top, then dives down some chutes and just goes to a classic pkill drop.

We arrived to plattekill at 10am on saturday, set up our camp, registered and i found out for once there was actually practice times due to UCI rules. I got my gear ready, hoped on the lift and was off. AHHH it felt so good to be back at my home away from home. The trail started off on a brand new starting ramp, and headed down a classic trail into a new gap jump, which was prob only 3ft tall w/ 15ft gap, super fun, land it then into a lil berm turn to the single track the is super fast traversing across the top of the mountain. It is filled with a bunch of lil berms that you absolutly blast into and out of, over some lil 2ft double rock drops and into more single track high speed stuff.

The trail starts to head more straight downhill and gets back into tighter single track, it then comes into a tricky part of the course with a right hander into a area with an option of a 5ft drop or3ft drop into shale landing w/ right hander shale berm into a flat rock left hander with 3 rocks you had to skip on the top of the tips of, into a chute which at the bottom was a flat rock again about 3ft from the knuckle of the hill that lead out to the ski trail/access road. You had to gap it step down and suck it up, very sketchy cuz it was a long way down to the bottom if you clipped your rear and went OTB.

Once you crossed the ski trail/access road there was a left handed berm into a lil chute leading into some fast very rocky single track that lead to another large drop option, about 6ft, or left line of double 2ft drops or 3rd option of the 2ft drop to turn across a ski trail again.

Across the ski trail was another quick chute into more left/right handers w/ lil berms which was really nice to see at pkill! then another straight down chute, into a left hander rooty single track off camber with a lil step down gap, into more fun blasting single track into a right hand berm.

This is towards the bottom of the race course now back onto a ski trail quick 50yard sprint to a left hander berm into a classsic plattekill drop, broken tooth, which the landing was nicely updated w/ more dirt, then into a right hand berm, down more single track, out into the ski trail, full on sprint into the last wood section that was fast with slight curve, back to the ski trail sprint into the wall ride then crossing the finish line.

Saturday was an absolute BLAST, did a bunch of practice runs then had to wait again till 3pm to get more race runs in, so we explored all the old trails we loved there, just having a blast going down the shale steep chutes that platekill has to offer. Practice at was 3 till 6 and i got in about 4runs on the course. Cleaned up took the gear off and walked the course with miss jamie lee.Mickey of spooky bikes put together an old school DS race with gates. The mechanic from fox shox burned in the track with a dirt bike making nice lil berms. That was fun to watch, and then after a foot down competition at the base of the lift.

We all headed back to the camping area, grilled some burgers, went into town got ice cream, came back and watched a film the guys at voncooper racing were projecting on the side of their van. About 10pm i passed out because practice sunday was at 7am till 930am.. super early for pkill racing.

Woke up at like 2am with rain on the tent, i thought great! now its gonna be a slick ass pkill race, woke up at 630am to fog covered drizzling plattekill, classic.. i really didnt wanna ride in this because the day before was 70 and sunny. Got my gear together, finally got on the lift at 815am, and the sun was slowly poking out. I did my normal half asleep first run to wake up then 2nd run turned on the heat. Almost at the bottom i tried a small gap but slipped on some roots, crashed real hard and bent my seat in half with my tailbone/other sensitive parts.. said well that was enough for me, packed in practice and waited for my race run at 2pm.

By 11am the sun was out in full force and I found another seat and did some warm up runs around 1230pm on some easy trails so i wasn't totally asleep for the race run. I heard the pro qualifying times from saturday being around 2mins 48seconds was the fastest. I was hoping for a sub 4minute sub because they were world cup riders, some of them top 5guys in the world. So my race run came and it was a big class 28guys. It was cool having a real timing system with the 5second count down timer with beeps.

I blast outta the gate, hit the jump, came up a lil short, but kept my speed, started pedaling in spots i havent before, i tried a new line on the double drop i saw pro's doing which was sweet! i just kept telling myself, bryn did this w/ no brakes, let go let go let go. and i was BLASTING the top section into the big drop/chute area, i was so squirrely on the drop and turn after it, i put a foot down and got it back together into the chute. The rest of the run i felt like i was going way faster than before, i came up to the gap i bent my seat on and got lame and didnt gap it again playing it safe by rolling it.

I had a great rest of the run, always telling myself to keep off the damn brakes and pedaled my head off towards the end. I came across with a 3minute 23second time, the winning world cup rider time was 2minute 43second, I was SOOO stoked, less than 1minute behind the pro winning time, and not just local pro's but world cup big time pro from trek world racing, transition, giant bikes and few others!! I ended up 12th outta 28 in my class, so nothing awsome, but still such a great time for me and the track was even better than practice because of the rain then it dried out.

We wrapped up the day by doing a bunch of really fun runs with the guys from action sports showing them around the mountain then watched the pro men's final runs, which was mind blowing fast. We rolled down, packed it up and said bye to everyone. Such an amazing weekend and start to the downhill race season. I cannot wait for the next one, unfortunately it will not be until July 4th weekend, but have already gotten to another mountain, highland the following weekend. So great to be back!

Crush'n It in PA!

Our man Doug is absolutely kill'n it in PA! Our deposit for the Ghostship custom cycling clothing has been submitted, proofs are in, and we're waiting. Thanks to everyone who put money down for some sweet new gear. If you know anyone who missed the first chance for a deposit, the window is still open for a short time. Tell 'em to drop that donut and get on it!

Outside of our regular, boring custom clothing updates, there are bike races happening. The Giro de Italia has been the most excited race that I've seen in several years. The Tour of California is wrapping up as I type, another good race that's still anyone's race. A little more locally, Mike Stock just put the wraps on a weekend of pointing things downhill up @ Plattekill in NY. We're waiting on results and his race report. Dougy Fresh is gearing up for the Trans-Sylvania Epic in the coming week. We're sure he'll have stories to trump stories.

The screen-printing press has been warmed up and is keep busy.(I wanted to post the image but the interwebs won't let me). Click here for the image. We collaborated with our friend Illus to come up with a nice, 4-color, hand-screened shirt for CT Comiconn. There was a pretty good turn out, and if you missed out, here's a little vid to make you feel like you were there:

And finally, to all of our friends who were recently unemployed, and are finding themselves falling back into the abyss of employment, I will leave with with this sage advice:

Official Custom Order Form

Our Official Custom Order Form is here! Finally! If you have expressed interest in obtaining a kit of all-things-Ghost-Shipish, now is the time to step up! Some details to keep in mind:

-The Absolute, Last, Final, End-date to place an order is Friday, May 14th. After that, the door will close and you'll be waiting to see if we ever do another one of these again (not in the near future! -matt).

-Orders will take 1-2 weeks to get the proofs approved, and another 6-8 for production. That puts us somewhere around mid-late July for delivery. Please be patient after placing your order.

-We are not making extras, so if you are interested, the only way to get some is to put down a deposit.

-Short Sleeved jerseys <strike>will be RACE CUT. What does race cut mean? Tight. Like hipster's pants. They're all race-y and shit.</strike> are available in both Race and Club cuts. The race is a super tight fit. If you don't think you want a skin tight jersey, get a Club cut instead. The Club cut is more along the lines of a classic fitting jersey. Jersey's are also available in both men's and ladies' cuts.

-We are using Champion Systems as our custom vendor for this go-round.

That about covers it. There are more details on the item page in the online store above. Thank you to everyone who has helped us through each step of this project. You help is most appreciated and we can't wait to share the satisfaction of the finished product in our hands when they're done.

Click the images for larger preview.

Ghostship Custom Clothing!

*UPDATE* After talking with the rest of the Ghostship Collective, we thought it best to change our custom vendor to save you some cash. We are now going through Champion System as our custom supplier. The graphics will stay the same and the prices will drop. See below...

Well, the time is finally here. Ghostship Custom Clothing is one step closer to finally being a reality. We designed 3 different pieces, a short-sleeved jersey, bibs to match and a downhill jersey. Check out the images below to see what you think. When you're done, head on over to our facebook page and let us know if you'll actually purchase one. And by 'purchase one' we actually mean that when the time comes to place your order, you will have cash or credit card in hand and will physically place an order to secure yourself said clothing item. Not, "Well, I really wanted one, but now I have to pay alimony" or "Man....I was gonna get one, but the Super-Ninja-Black-Ops-Task-Force 17 came out for Playstation 8 so I totally had to cop it...sorry dude". <strike>Pricing below isn't completely finalized, and may change slightly.</strike> But it should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.

What we're trying to figure out is how many orders we can actually count on. If we don't get enough interest, then the project is sadly, scrapped. Many, many....many hours of hard work down the tubes. The process will probably go something like this:
-We get enough interest. All of you are super-rad and want stuff.
-Online ordering will begin once we have a general idea of who's down. We're thinking about a 3 week period to place your order in full. After that, the window is firmly closed, no exceptions. Who knows when another will be available.
-Once we get our design approved, figure anywhere between 6-8 weeks until the clothing is delivered.
-We bag, tag and ship your order out to you.
-You ride happy knowing you're part of the something special. Do much shredding and spill beer, bacon and other fried goods all over your new threads.

And without further nonsense, here's the clothing:(click for larger images)

Short Sleeved Jersey
-Race Cut / Full Length Separating Zipper - <strike>$95</strike> $65 shipped

Bib Shorts
-Race Cut - <strike>$100</strike> $70 shipped

Downhill Jersey
-The final version will be V-Neck, Anchors may be a bit larger on sleeve. Left sleeve graphic will travel up length of arm so it will read correctly on the bike, not cut off as it appears now. - <strike>$100</strike> $70 shipped

So that's the deal. Don't forget to head over to our facebook page and let us know if you want any of these. As soon as we figure out if there's enough interest, we'll let you know the next step. When all was said and done, he was ok, only a few scrapes, and got the guy to pay for his bike's damages, and drive him home. Not too shabby. Glad you're ok buddy! There's lots of riding to be had this season, no fun getting whacked by cars.

Over dinner tonight, the conversation got kinda funny:

Doug: The guy couldn't drive for shit anyway.
Me: Oh yeah?
Doug: Yeah, I was pressed up against the door while he was driving me home. Really scary.

Funny ha-ha, not funny weird. In case you were keeping score. But this is not so much funny:

Dinner conversation turned to a few different subjects, like old snowboard equipment (Burton CFX bindings), recent rides, and the upcoming Ghostship kits. Oh shit! What? That's right. Ghostship kits are almost finished. We're tightening up the design pages, crossing the T's and erasing errant pencil marks. Right now we're shopping custom companies in an effort to find the best balance between affordability and quality. When designs are finalized we'll post them up here with a listing of options available, tentative pricing and more details. So far this winter hasn't been a total wash out. There have been some great days to ride, and not-so great and a bunch in between. We hope you've all had the chance to get some rides in. Or make some art. Or record some music. All fun stuff.

Our man Dougy-Fresh got some SERIOUS pre-season prep taken care of. And by serious we mean surgery. He mentions is in a brief section of his blog here: "for I was still fresh off surgery on my sinuses (about 2 weeks out... yeah, started 2010 with a doctor's visit, but it was planned). Temperatures finally rose above freezing (got to maybe 40*F that day) so I figured my sinuses wouldn't be that sensitive. I was wrong. The air hurt as I would breathe." During one of our phone convo's he mentioned what a big difference there was in just being able to breathe regularly (once he got the horrible packing taken out of his face). *note, this is not Doug. Just some poor dude getting his nostril abused.

So we're stoked that Doug is recovered, the surgery went well, and that he's positively going to terrorize everyone at his races this year. It's basically like super-charging and already finely tuned engine. Nutty.

Mike Stock wrote us a note about what he's been up to lately: "class forevvvvverrr". Well said Mike, well said.

Other than that, we're got our proverbial irons in a couple of fires at the moment. We're in process of putting the wraps on about 3-4 new designs, which will hopefully be available for pre-order in the near future. Keep riding, and here's to warmer weather sooner than later.
