Tony Tyrant took these rad photos and we thank him profusely for letting us use them here!
Saturday saw the Ghostship/EC Scorchers team participating in some rad, alleycat-racing action. We went out and terrorized for New Haven in the cloudy, overcast land that is Providence for the Paperboy 2 alleycat race. Met some cool folks, went fast up and down some hills, watched some locals almost get hit by cars (no brakes, no clips or straps only flat pedals? really?).
Matt's race report:
"Met up with Drew, Dan, Al and Raph. We loaded up @ Drew's house @ 10AM, loaded up the Wizard Van, headed to Fuel for caffeine and sweets and hit the road. We got into (sunny, surprisingly) Providence about noon. Enough time to unload, change some worn tires, air up and ride around a bit. Hit up a bar for a drink before the race and picked up some 'energy' drinks on the way back to the race start. Registered and met some locals. Was crazy to see some 11-teen year old riders there. Youngest racer was something like 14? And brakeless, no clips or straps? Wow. Nuts. With no maps (hey Providence, how about some love for out-of-towners next race!), no knowledge of the city, we figured our best bet was to follow a rabbit and stick together as a group. That got thrown out about 3 seconds after the start. Raph went the winning direction, the rest of us, well, didn't! Hahahha! Bombed some lights on the way to the statehouse, and there was no checkpoint. Lost a few mins trying to find it, then went to the next. I got shelled off by missing the lights and not wanting to get hit. I had to bury myself a few times to catch back on. Caught back up and it was just me, Drew and our rabbit. We hit a couple of checkpoints, our rabbit turned a corner and disappeared! Lost, no map, no nothing, we abled back to the downtown, randomly did a couple of checkpoints. Caught back on with a girl who was gunning for 1st place ladies. At this point, we knew we weren't in contention and were racing to ride. Took a tour of the city, went to the finish line, ate some food. Cooled out with everyone. Afterparty was hours after the race so we packed it in and went home. Thanks for the fun race Providence!"
When all was said and done, it was Raph who brought home the glory for the Scorchers/Ghostship. 5th place overall, 1st place out of town. Well done! Some flicks:
